To all Cass and Babs fans -

Up at Newsarama, there is a poll asking "Who should be Batgirl". Can I just ask all Cass/Babs fans to take a minute out of their day to vote? Newsarama is like the most famous comic book news source, and it'd be nice for Cass to get some love there, and to show that Babsgirl is NOT WANTED.

I actually voted for Steph.

I'm ready for Cass to say "Screw you guys, I'm going home", take up her old Kasumi ID, and go do some stuff independent of the Bat-clan.

Steph, meanwhile, sort of fits the profile of the "traditional" Batgirl a little better, so she could be a good compromise that doesn't involve undoing 23 years of character development!

Just out of curiosity, what do you think would make Steph more of a "traditional" Batgirl?

Totally agreed there, I loved Babs as Batgirl but to see her go back to that, I'd be at the stage where I know DC is out to destroy all the characters I love.

I'll vote Cass, because while Steph would be a good Batgirl, she's been shorthanded way too many times by the batfamily to in my mind become a full part of it and go evil the way Cass did.

I've done my duty and voted for Cass.

But I have to say a part of me is worried that if she stays as Batgirl, and doesn't immediately get a writer who genuinely likes Cass as a character and is thoughtful and sensitive in dealing with her, I fear she'll be stuck in Adam Beechen-mode forever, even if Beechen isn't writing her.

I wouldn't be completely opposed to Steph becoming Batgirl, but it wouldn't feel right. She's already got a perfectly good costume/identity, and because of the controversy about her death and her subsequent return, she's more recognizable as Spoiler (and DC is all about characters being iconic and recognizable, right?). And besides, Cass is so religiously devoted to the concept of "The Bat", and now the majority of her family/friends are in Gotham. It would be a waste to drop that and have her create a new hero identity right now.

Oh! DC! DC! Hire me!

I have enough ideas to sustain a Cass series for...two to three years at this very moment! Possibly more depending on how long I can drag on the meta-arc of the series.

(edit: Let me try that again...)

I voted for Harley! Heh! See, that was the Dodsons' Harley dressed as Batgirl ... anyone? Bueller?

Cassandra Cain got my vote. I think she'll vanish if she's not part of the Batfamily under Oracle's wing where she belongs.

I'm surprised that Steph!Batgirl is making such a strong showing. I would be ok with it for a while, as long as eventually Steph is back in purple eggplant and Cass is back in black.

I voted for an unknown, because I see it this way. Steph can keep the spoiler mantle, because she is awesome. Babs is Oracle in my mind, having been Oracle in the first story of hers I read. And Cass can assume her own name and costume, but still have ties to the bat-family (I mean Robin has nothing to do with bats, but he's still part of the bat-family). Although I still think Batman needs a Batgirl.

One ODD idea that occurred to me: multiple women as Batgirl. Cass & Steph, maybe, under Babs training?

Wow, so much Babs on there. The sad thing is, people who voted for Babs probably did so more because they wanted to restore the mantle to its iconic look, not because they thought it would be good for Barbara. Would a real Barbara Gordon fan want to get rid of Oracle (I suddenly feel horrible for using the phrase "real fan", but I can't think of any other way to say it)?

And why isn't Helena on this poll? She was Batgirl, and I'd rather see her than half the people on the list (although I prefer her as Huntress). Ah well, voted for Cass.

I think it's against the rules to link to something that has comic images on the page. If you want to access it, you go to Newsarama.com and then to the right of the "Halo 3" thing, there should be a little blurb saying "Poll: Who do you think should be Batgirl?". Click on that, and then you're there!

My vote is for Spoiler too... but it's close. Cass is my second choice. I loved that one time she went out in Barbara's old costume. Except the heels.

Why Steph? Her independence, fallibility, chemistry with Robin, and slightly defiant relationship with Batman. She really echoes Barbara's original attitude. Cassandra is ultra cool but she's such a badass that there's no reason for her to remain in Batman's shadow.

On the other hand, after the way Batman (and to an extent the rest of them) treated her, I can't imagine why Stephanie would want to be part of the Bat-family anymore.

Wow, Cass shot way past Barbara on that poll. Then Stephanie started catching up. Cass needs to put in an appearance on Batman: The Brave & The Bold, I've decided.

On a related train of thought: since body language is Cass' first language, has she ever been shown communicating using body language? That would be an interesting direction to take her character, if difficult to convey (it'd probably come across as an informed ability, sort of "we've drawn her like this, but trust us, her pose and movement is totally conveying exactly what she's thinking to the other heroes in a totally comprehensible way, totally").

Voted for Cass. Can't remember, but I think the Wally vote was on IGN? And allowed multiple voting by a single voter?

Don't know. Love Babs as Batgirl, but she's past that. Cass is awesome as Batgirl.

There's a lot of Cass!hate out there and I can't figure what that's specifically about. So far I think it's a certain amount is fansters that can't get over Babs NOT being in yellow heels and looking hot. Another group who can't get past Babs getting TKJ'd. (I'm still working on it.) Another group who can't get over Hot!Babs being replaced by a young girl with specific issues and who, most importantly, wears that gimpmask.

I just want Babs to be Babs. Not the most iconic version of the name that is called Batgirl. Come on. DC is building a new Batwoman and Babs effing gets to be her junior?

If we really are going for most iconic characters, shouldn't Babs be the best Oracle she can be?

Also, I like Cass. I think she's a brilliant creation. Incredibly interesting. As a bat. How about showing us a little more of that versus um... what we saw in the Beechen series. Before she goes evil or gets killed or whatever. Slow down, DC! Cass as a bat! It's fascinating to me.

Woops! Sorry, I hope it's okay if I pop this down here, I accidentally put my original post in the wrong spot. Sorry!

Just replying to say motto to a lot of you, even if I liked the TNBA Batgirl. I'm just so personally sad that DC themselves doesn't realise how much they are destroying these great female characters.

When you have an inspiring story about a girl who overcame being trained to be nothing more than a weapon, and channeled her feelings into a force of good much like Bruce did, you just don't screw it up by having Bruce totally disregard someone like that and only using her AS a a weapon when there is so much potential for chemistry there. You also don't have said girl just become evil, totally undoing the theme that redemption is not a lost road, and that destiny IS in the hand of a person. You don't do that, and ESPECIALLY if the character is female AND the only non-American member of the Batfamily, because then you've just destroyed the makings of a great legacy.

For the umpteenth post, so sorry for the rant. I swear I'm getting angrier every day...

Looking at the voting, there's roughly a three way tie between Cass/Barbara/Steph. So let Cass be Batgirl Mondays and Wednesdays, let Steph be Batgirl Friday and Saturdays, let Barbara be Batgirl Tuesdays and Thursdays, and they all get Sunday off to have fun with Robins.

I actually didn't vote for Cass. Seems to me, most of her problems with writers is because she *is* Batgirl.

Maybe if she used a different identity she'd get a writer who'd respect her a bit more.

I'd be ok with Steph, Misfit, or Bett to be honest. If they're changing Robins might as well change Batgirl too.
